WHO IS EPIFANY?

Epifany's Story

Epifany, a gifted playwright, author, spoken word artist, entertainment manager and mother of three sons, was born in Mississippi and raised in North Carolina. Her interest in word choices and rhyming led her to discover poetry in the second grade. At the age of 12, her love for poetry expanded significantly. As a result of the challenges she faced as a pre-teen, her ability to write became a coping strategy for the agony she felt. She began to write poetry more frequently in high school after being exposed to authors like Shakespeare, Zora Neal Hurston, Maya Angelo, Langston Hughes, and Emily Dickerson.

She later enrolled at Mississippi State University, where she was exposed to folklore which furthered her growth. After seeing Def Poetry Jam hosts like Mos Def, she realized performance poetry was her calling.

Epifany made her stage debut at the Blue Flame Café in North Carolina. When she relocated back to Mississippi, Mot n Eds Café in Memphis, Tennessee, became her poetry home. There, she honed her performance skills and shared her poetry. As a result of her regular bookings, she made the decision to stand out by creating her own "playetry's," or mini-poetic plays, which eventually inspired her to make the shows "Black Chic Monologue and Menace II Society." She ventured out on her own and produced "Tales from the Otha Side," her first solo production, after finding success in both Memphis and Nashville. Both performances drew a sizable audience, and they were hailed as some of Memphis' best productions at the time.

In June 2018, when her literary career was at its height, she had a sad loss when her older brother passed away from cancer. She took a three-year break to process her grief and rediscover her passion for poetry. When she returned to the realm of poetry, she experienced yet another setback. In April 2021, her 17-year-old son was killed in a car accident. She returned after a year of mourning, stronger than ever to demonstrate to the world what a force of nature she is in the arts. She quickly proved just that, as she has earned many award nominations, including Poet of the Year for the 2024 Southern Entertainment Awards and was recently voted the Best Female Spoken Word Artist for the 2024 National Spoken Word Awards. Epifany uses her platform for freedom of sexual expression, the reality of relationships, and to advocate for mental health awareness. She declares, "I'm not stopping until I sit down at the table with Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey."
